Innovative Energy Solutions for Healthcare and Mobility in Africa
Nigerian innovator Derick Nwasor's 'Just Add Water' system for power and medical oxygen, along with Ghana's Fusion Wind Turbine, is recognized in the 2026 Africa Prize shortlist. These initiatives aim to enhance reliability in healthcare facilities and reduce diesel dependency across Africa.

Derick Nwasor's 'Just Add Water' system harnesses regenerative fuel cell technology for electricity and medical-grade oxygen production, currently deployed in three Lagos hospitals. The initiative aims to scale from 100kW to 1MW systems, enhancing healthcare infrastructure across Nigeria while reducing diesel reliance.
Ghana's Fusion Wind Turbine, developed by MINAGIE Energy, combines wind and solar power to deliver over 6,000 hours of electricity to rural health centers, supporting maternal health and vaccine preservation. The Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation has recognized these initiatives among 16 shortlisted projects from 11 countries, highlighting the shift toward sustainable energy solutions in Africa's healthcare and transport sectors.
