Aur Line Grange, an accomplished environmental engineer, has become a prominent figure at the intersection of technological innovation and purpose-driven entrepreneurship. With a master’s degree from EPFL, she co-founded On a Mission in 2019, a nonprofit focused on funding community-led reforestation projects, followed by the creation of Open Forest Protocol in 2020, which utilizes blockchain technology to enhance transparency in environmental initiatives.

Grange's affinity for the outdoors can be traced back to her childhood in the Haute Savoie region of France. Growing up near Evian-les-Bains, she spent much of her time in nature, assisting her grandfather in the garden and caring for injured animals. This connection to the environment naturally guided her toward a career in environmental engineering, a field she chose during her time at EPFL after exploring various interests, including veterinary science.

Her academic journey was enriched by international experiences, such as studying at the University of Waterloo in Canada and Princeton University, where she focused on hydrologic modeling and climate resilience. This foundation propelled her into a role at CSD Ingénieurs, where she applied her skills to a range of innovative projects, including waste management systems and geothermal energy solutions.

In 2019, Grange embraced a new challenge when a colleague introduced the idea of On a Mission. Initially hesitant, she recognized the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to reforestation efforts, which require significant community involvement and sustainable practices. The nonprofit aims to support projects that involve local communities and native species, establishing long-term partnerships for lasting impact.

Recognizing the barriers faced by local NGOs in accessing funding and the carbon credit market, Grange and her colleague developed an application to facilitate project tracking. This tool not only enhances financial security for local organizations but also streamlines the process of securing funding. As a result, Open Forest Protocol emerged, combining cutting-edge technology with a mission to restore ecosystems.

The company’s blockchain-based system ensures full traceability of projects, allowing for public access to monitoring reports and verifications. With over 300 projects in more than 20 countries, Grange highlights significant initiatives in Peru and Kenya, where reforestation efforts have revitalized local biodiversity and provided sustainable income for communities.

As the carbon credit market expands, with projections reaching $50 billion by 2050, Grange acknowledges both its potential and its complexities. She asserts the need for a fairer system that directly benefits local organizations and emphasizes the importance of funding high-quality initiatives that enhance biodiversity.

Grange's journey has not been without challenges. Balancing multiple commitments while establishing her ventures required immense dedication, particularly during tumultuous times, such as the onset of the war in Ukraine, which posed uncertainties for her team. Yet, she emphasizes the importance of maintaining balance and prioritizing self-care amidst the demands of entrepreneurship.

Ultimately, Grange encourages others to embrace their passions and nurture their curiosity, asserting that the pursuit of meaningful work can mitigate fears associated with risk. Success, she believes, is a marathon that requires preparation, resilience, and a commitment to causes that resonate deeply.
