INPEX and Osaka Gas Initiate Demonstration at Large-Scale Methanation Facility in Japan
INPEX and Osaka Gas have launched demonstration operations at a large-scale methanation facility in Niigata Prefecture, Japan. The facility has a capacity of 400 Nm3-CO2 per hour, equivalent to the annual gas consumption of about 10,000 households. Construction began in 2023, supported by a subsidy from NEDO. The facility achieved its technical target with a 96% methane concentration during trials and received certification as a clean gas production plant in January 2026.

INPEX Corporation and Osaka Gas Co., Ltd. have commenced demonstration operations at a methanation facility in Niigata Prefecture, Japan, following its construction and trial runs. The facility, which began construction in 2023, processes 400 Nm3-CO2 per hour, supporting approximately 10,000 households.
E-methane was successfully injected into a natural gas pipeline on February 20. INPEX is managing the project, focusing on CO2 methanation technology and potential regional deployment. The plant received clean gas production certification on January 27, 2026, enabling the issuance of environmental value certificates for the synthetic methane.
