Inter Electric Power Proposes AI Data Center at Former Robena Coal Mine in Greene County
Inter Electric Power has proposed Project Hummingbird, an AI data center to be developed on the former Robena Coal Mine site in Greene County, with initial efforts focused on restoring coal mine refuse piles. Community concerns regarding environmental impacts and local population decline were raised during the planning commission meeting, while IEP indicated that natural gas generators could be introduced, although no buyer for the data center currently exists. The company dismissed community benefits agreements, prioritizing corporate interests over local needs.

Inter Electric Power (IEP) officials presented Project Hummingbird to the Greene County planning commission on December 17, aiming to develop a new AI data center on the former Robena Coal Mine property. Phase I of the project focuses on restoring coal mine refuse piles.
Public comments expressed concerns about environmental impacts, emergency services, and local population decline. IEP spokesman Dave Spigelmyer indicated there is no current buyer for the data center but stated that natural gas generators could still be brought in.
If not required on-site, power could be sold to the grid. Community benefits agreements were dismissed by IEP, emphasizing corporate interests over local community needs.
