Israel's Carmel Programme Advances Development of Next-Generation Armoured Fighting Vehicles
Launched in 2016 by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), the Carmel programme aims to develop a next-generation armoured fighting vehicle (AFV) concept that features a two-person crew and integrates advanced technologies such as autonomy, AI, AR, and sensor fusion. The Ministry of Defense (MoD) shifted the focus from a single vehicle to a technology suite for various AFV platforms.
In October 2021, Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) was chosen as the prime contractor, emphasizing a 'system of systems' approach. The Carmel technologies include command, situational awareness, lethality, mobility, and operations systems, enhancing crew performance and operational capabilities.
The Merkava 4 Barak MBT, operational since 2023, incorporates Carmel technologies and features a combat cockpit with advanced sensor integration. The Eitan AFV is undergoing development with plans for future integration of Carmel technologies, while the Namer APC has begun receiving upgrades. A USD 1.5 billion initiative aims to boost production of these platforms over five years, with expectations for the Eitan IFV to enter service by 2030.
