Italian Navy Commissions Tritone Vessel for Enhanced Seabed Operations
The Italian Navy has commissioned the Tritone (A 5341), a multi-purpose support vessel aimed at seabed warfare and critical infrastructure protection. This procurement signifies a shift towards flexible capability acquisition through commercial platforms, enhancing operational experimentation and national security.

Tritone (A 5341), delivered on April 14, 2026, by Fincantieri, represents a strategic enhancement in the Italian Navy's operational capabilities. Funded with €53.5 million, the vessel is designed for missions like surveillance and support of critical underwater infrastructure, with the potential to test new underwater technologies.
Tritone measures 81.7 meters in length and displaces 6,600 tons, featuring advanced electric propulsion and dynamic positioning systems. Its modular design allows for versatile mission adaptations, while it acts as a mothership for various unmanned systems. This vessel will complement existing capabilities, notably the Olterra ship, and supports the Italian Navy's future plans for underwater operations, including the anticipated UPSDS unit by 2031.
