Italian Navy Engages Across Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Indian Ocean Amid Ongoing Operations
The Italian Navy is actively deployed across strategic regions, with six frigates and various vessels operating in the Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Indian Ocean. Key operations include participation in NATO exercises in the Arctic, EU maritime missions in the Red Sea, and counter-piracy efforts in the Indian Ocean. The destroyer Andrea Doria has returned early from NATO exercises, while other vessels, including ITS Virginio Fasan and ITS Luigi Rizzo, are engaged in multinational naval operations.

The Italian Navy is currently operating in the Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Indian Ocean with at least six frigates deployed. Notable activities include the destroyer Andrea Doria's early return from Exercise Cold Response 2026 in the Arctic.
The amphibious transport dock ITS San Giusto is supporting NATO exercises in northern Norway. In the North Atlantic, frigate ITS Alpino recently visited Halifax, Canada. In the Eastern Mediterranean, frigate ITS Martinengo is part of the Carrier Strike Group with the French Charles de Gaulle.
ITS Virginio Fasan serves as the flagship of NATO's SNMG2 in the Mediterranean. In the Indian Ocean, frigates ITS Luigi Rizzo and ITS Emilio Bianchi are leading EU missions Operation Aspides and Operation Atalanta, respectively. Additionally, three coastal patrol vessels operate in the Red Sea as part of the Multinational Force & Observers mission, reflecting the strategic importance of these regions for maritime security.
