Italy Accelerates Return to Nuclear Energy with New Reactor Plans
Italy is planning a return to nuclear energy, aiming to contribute to the global goal of tripling nuclear capacity by 2050. The Italian Energy Minister stated that this is part of a strategy for a responsible and transparent nuclear energy mix, with projections for 8-16 GW of installed capacity by 2050. Italy will focus on advanced modular reactors and is involved in international fusion programs. A legislative proposal is expected by February 2025, aiming to have new reactors operational by 2030.

Italy plans to return to nuclear energy, supporting the international goal to triple global nuclear capacity by 2050. Energy Minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin highlighted that nuclear energy can aid decarbonization and energy security amid rising energy demands.
Italy aims for 8-16 GW of nuclear capacity by 2050, contributing 11-22% of electricity needs. The focus will be on advanced modular reactors and fourth-generation technologies. In February 2025, a legislative proposal will be introduced, with new reactors expected to be operational by 2030. Italy retains nuclear expertise, with Enel operating reactors in Spain and ENI investing in the U.S.
