Italy has begun the procurement process for two next-generation destroyers, designated as DDX/DDG, with a budget of approximately €2.7 billion, excluding VAT. The formal notice was published in the EU Official Journal, indicating that the procurement procedure will commence on 18 February 2026.
This initiative, managed through OCCAR, involves Orizzonte Sistemi Navali (OSN) as the primary industrial partner. The program follows a 15 December 2021 contract focused on risk reduction and design definition.
The DDX is positioned as an upgrade of the FREMM EVO design and includes comprehensive support and technology evolution throughout the ships' service life. This strategy aims to maintain Italy's advanced air-defense capabilities amid evolving threats in the Mediterranean, replacing older vessels like the Durand de la Penne/Mimbelli and later the Doria-class destroyers.
