Jammu and Kashmir Launches Rehabilitation Plan for Sawalkote Hydroelectric Project
The Jammu and Kashmir government has initiated a rehabilitation plan for the Sawalkote hydropower project, which will impact Ramban, Udhampur, and Reasi districts. This project, with a capacity of 1,856 MW, is crucial for regional energy needs and economic development, despite facing procedural delays.

The Sawalkote hydroelectric project, under development in Jammu and Kashmir, has a total land requirement of 1,401.35 hectares, with Ramban district accounting for 1,097.55 hectares. Rehabilitation measures include compensation for affected landowners and entitlements across Ramban, Udhampur, and Reasi, with Ramban experiencing the highest land submergence at 1,030.55 hectares.
Infrastructure development for all-weather connectivity is being coordinated with the National Highway Authority of India and the Border Roads Organisation. The project, with an estimated cost of ₹31,380 crore, is set to be completed by 2032, though existing delays could impact this timeline. The project aims to provide significant economic benefits to the involved districts but has faced historical hurdles since its conception in the 1960s.
