Japan Airlines and GMO Internet to Test Humanoid Robots at Haneda Airport
Japan Airlines and GMO Internet Group will launch a demonstration project in May 2026 utilizing humanoid robots for airport ground operations at Tokyo's Haneda Airport. The initiative aims to address labor shortages in the sector as passenger travel demand increases and the Japanese workforce ages.

Starting in May 2026, Japan Airlines Co. and GMO AI & Robotics will initiate the first humanoid robot trial at Haneda Airport, focusing on baggage handling and cabin cleaning. This project is part of a multi-year program expected to run until 2028, addressing severe labor shortages in ground handling as tourism rebounds.
The humanoid robots, manufactured in China, will operate for two to three hours and must navigate complex environments alongside existing ground support equipment. The collaboration aims to enhance operational efficiency while ensuring safety and integration with human workers. The project will also explore further applications of humanoid robots in various airport operations, potentially transforming industry practices.
