Japan Airlines to Pilot Humanoid Robots for Ground Operations at Tokyo Haneda
Japan Airlines (JAL) is set to test humanoid robots at Tokyo Haneda Airport beginning in May 2026. The initiative aims to enhance operational efficiency and address labor shortages in ground handling.
Japan Airlines, in collaboration with JAL Ground Service and GMO AI & Robotics Corporation, will initiate a trial of humanoid robots in airport ground operations at Tokyo Haneda. The project begins with site analysis to determine safe operational areas, followed by tests with robots unloading cargo containers.
This effort is driven by labor shortages and the physical demands of ground handling. JAL anticipates these robots could handle various tasks, including baggage loading and cabin cleaning. The robots are designed to adapt to existing airport infrastructure, mitigating the need for extensive modifications. The trial's focus will remain on non-public operations during its initial phase, ensuring safety and compliance are prioritized.
