Japan and Philippines Strengthen Energy Sector Cooperation
Japan is enhancing its energy cooperation with the Philippines, focusing on LNG, renewable energy, and infrastructure development. Key agreements and investments from Japanese entities are expected to bolster energy security and sustainability in the region.

Japan's engagement in the Philippines' energy sector includes significant projects like the LNG terminal in Batangas and the CBK Pumped Storage Power Plant, collectively contributing several gigawatts of power generation capacity. Key agreements have been established, including a memorandum of cooperation between Japan's METI and the Philippines' DOE, alongside partnerships formed by JBIC with major Philippine firms.
The recent arrival of 140,000 liters of diesel from Japan illustrates ongoing support despite global fuel challenges. Japan also initiated the POWERR Asia framework, committing about $10 billion to enhance energy resilience.
This collaboration aims to secure energy supplies and diversify sources, addressing both immediate and long-term needs for the Philippines and neighboring countries. The upcoming visit of former Prime Minister Kishida highlights the ongoing commitment to this partnership.
