Japan and UNOPS Complete Renewable Energy Project in Sierra Leone Benefiting Over 15,000 Residents
The Project for Enhancing the Impact of Rural Renewable Energy in Sierra Leone officially closed on February 27, 2026. Funded by Japan and implemented by UNOPS, the initiative improved electricity access in six Bo District communities through solar power plants and distribution systems, benefiting over 15,000 residents. The project, which began in 2021, aims to support Sierra Leone's electricity sector reform and promote sustainable development.

On February 27, 2026, the Project for Enhancing the Impact of Rural Renewable Energy officially closed in Sierra Leone. Funded by Japan and executed by UNOPS, the project installed solar power plants and distribution systems in six communities in Bo District, providing sustainable electricity to over 15,000 residents.
Initiated in 2021, it supports Sierra Leone's electricity sector reform and aims to enhance public service delivery and economic growth. The project aligns with national goals to increase electricity access from 36% to 78% by 2030. Stakeholders are encouraged to ensure long-term sustainability of the facilities.
