Japan Begins Sea Trials of 100-Kilowatt Laser Weapon for Drone Defense

DEFENSE

Japan has commenced sea trials of a 100-kilowatt laser weapon aboard a Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force ship to evaluate its performance against drones. The laser weapon, developed under Japan's defense research program, heats targets using a beam of energy.

Unlike traditional systems, it can continue firing as long as there is electrical power. Japan's Defense Acquisition, Technology & Logistics Agency has been researching high-power lasers since 2010, with early demonstrations conducted in the late 2010s.

The program aims to counter the increasing use of inexpensive drones in modern conflicts. Challenges include generating sufficient electrical power and maintaining beam stability on moving ships. The trials will assess the laser's sustained firing capability and target switching speed, determining its practicality for frontline use.
