Japan Ends Arms Export Ban, Strengthens Defense Ties with Allies
Japan has lifted its ban on lethal weapons exports, allowing sales to 17 allied nations, including Australia and the Philippines. This policy shift, reversing a 1967 regulation, aims to enhance regional security amid rising tensions with China and North Korea.

Japan's government has initiated a policy change allowing the export of lethal military equipment to 17 nations, including Australia and the Philippines. This decision, announced by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, aims to bolster Japan's defense exports and support allies amid growing regional threats.
Japan has finalized a $6.5 billion deal with Australia for 11 Mogami-class frigates, with deliveries commencing by 2030. Additionally, Japan is developing advanced military capabilities, including a sixth-generation stealth fighter jet with the UK and Italy and a Glide Phase Interceptor with the US. This shift may strengthen alliances but raises concerns about escalating regional tensions.
