Japan Plans to Export Dual-Use Products to Nordic Countries Amidst Increased Defense Cooperation
Japan is set to export dual-use products to Nordic countries, following a joint statement on technological cooperation with Finland and plans for a similar agreement with Sweden. This initiative, driven by heightened defense concerns in Europe due to Russia's actions in Ukraine, includes a delegation from Japan's Economy, Trade and Industry Ministry and various companies exploring joint business opportunities, particularly in innovative technologies like satellite systems and robotics. The collaboration emphasizes potential financial support from Japanese institutions for development activities in these critical areas.

Japanese public and private sectors are set to promote dual-use products, applicable for both military and civilian use, in Nordic countries. A joint statement on technological cooperation was issued by Japan and Finland, with a similar document planned with Sweden.
This initiative follows rising defense awareness in Europe due to Russia's actions against Ukraine. A delegation, including officials from Japan's Economy, Trade and Industry Ministry, JBIC, and around 25 companies such as Kawasaki Heavy Industries and Toshiba, began a European tour.
The delegation will also meet with Nokia and Ericsson to explore joint business opportunities. This marks Japan's first joint overseas effort to demonstrate dual-use technologies, which include innovative satellite technology, robotic assistance suits, and cost-effective cardboard drones. The Finland joint statement emphasizes the critical nature of these technologies and mentions potential financial support from Japanese institutions for development activities.
