Japan Pursues Defense Export Cooperation with U.S. for Used Aircraft in Southeast Asia
Japan aims to enhance defense exports through partnerships with the U.S. for reselling aircraft in Southeast Asia, following its leasing of TC-90s to the Philippines. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to build a defense manufacturing market amidst upcoming decisions on replacing its F-2 fighter fleet.

Japan is focusing on expanding defense exports by collaborating with the U.S. for the resale of used aircraft to Southeast Asia, following the leasing success of TC-90s to the Philippines. The Japanese Ministry of Defense's Takahiro Yoshida highlighted plans for trilateral discussions with ASEAN countries to provide used aircraft and support packages.
Japan's F-2 fighters are set to retire by the mid-2030s, with a decision on their replacement expected by next summer. This initiative aligns with Japan's recent policy shifts allowing more international partnerships in defense manufacturing. The P-1 maritime patrol aircraft is also featured in this strategy, with export conditions emphasizing technology security and partnerships.
