Japanese Companies' $50 Billion LNG Investment Influences Australia and Japan's Climate Policies
A report by InfluenceMap reveals that Japanese companies, including Inpex, Jera, and Mitsubishi Corporation, have invested over $50 billion in Australian LNG projects, significantly influencing energy and climate policies in both Australia and Japan. The investments could lead to emissions of approximately 290 million tonnes of CO2e annually. The report highlights frequent meetings between Japanese firms and Australian officials, emphasizing the promotion of gas as a transition fuel despite contradictions with global climate goals.

Japanese energy companies, including Inpex, Jera, and Mitsubishi Corporation, have invested over $50 billion in Australian LNG export projects, representing 21% of total investment. This investment could result in emissions of about 290 million tonnes of CO2e annually.
The companies are actively represented in various Australian industry associations and have met with Australian officials at least 24 times since 2022. Their lobbying efforts have led to the promotion of gas as a transition fuel, despite conflicts with international climate agreements. A shift towards renewable energy is being advocated by Australian and Japanese groups, highlighting the need for a cleaner energy partnership.
