Japan's ATLA Begins Prototyping Scramjet-Powered Hypersonic Missile with MHI Partnership

DEFENSE

Japan's Acquisition, Technology & Logistics Agency (ATLA) has commenced prototyping components for a scramjet-powered hypersonic missile. The development includes the missile's scramjet engine, rocket engine, warhead, and seeker.

The project, aimed at creating a stand-off defense capability against invading forces, will utilize JPY73.2 billion (USD462 million) from Japan's FY 2026 defense budget for design and prototype manufacturing. An additional JPY30.1 billion is allocated for the acquisition of hypersonic missiles and ground equipment.

The program, which began in 2023, is expected to be completed by 2031. ATLA is collaborating with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), which operates a hypersonic wind tunnel in Nagasaki. Furthermore, ATLA is also developing a Hyper Velocity Gliding Projectile (HVGP) with MHI, slated for deployment in 2026.
