Japan's JMSDF Commissions Fifth Taigei-Class Submarine JS Chōgei for Indo-Pacific Operations
On March 10, 2026, the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force commissioned the JS Chōgei (SS 517), the fifth Taigei-class submarine. Built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, the submarine has a standard displacement of 3,000 tonnes. It is part of a series of eight submarines aimed at renewing Japan's fleet. The project cost 64.8 billion yen ($443 million) and is set to enhance Japan's underwater capabilities in the Indo-Pacific region.

The JS Chōgei is assigned to Yokosuka Naval Base and incorporates design modifications for mixed-gender crews, reflecting personnel policy changes in Japan's defense forces.
