Japan's JX Metals Achieves 90% Lithium Recovery from Battery Recycling
JX Metals in Japan has improved lithium recovery rates from spent batteries to 90%, enhancing its position in the recycling industry. This advancement addresses significant waste and critical mineral challenges in battery production, potentially impacting global supply chains and economic security.

JX Metals Circular Solutions in Tsuruga has reported a lithium recovery rate of 90% from spent lithium-ion batteries, a significant increase from below 50%. This development positions Japan as a leader in the battery recycling sector, which was valued at $13 billion in 2022 and is projected to reach $70 billion by 2035.
Competing with this achievement, a company founded by former Tesla CTO JB Straubel claims a 95% recovery rate in the U.S. The growth of battery recycling is crucial for the sustainability of electric vehicles and consumer electronics, highlighting the need for efficient material recovery to mitigate the impacts of mining.
