Jeonbuk State Plans Gunsan Shipyard Revitalization with AI, Hydrogen, and Repair Initiatives
Jeonbuk State announced plans on March 25 to revitalize the Gunsan shipyard by integrating AI shipbuilding, alternative fuel testing, and vessel repair. Governor Kim Kwan-young aims to transition the yard from producing ship components to building complete vessels, targeting finished ships to be launched by 2028. Key projects include a $16.8 million marine mobility AI initiative by 2028, an $11.3 million alternative fuel platform to be completed this year, and an unmanned marine systems testbed due next year, along with connections to the Wanju hydrogen cluster.

Jeonbuk State announced on March 25 a plan to revitalize the Gunsan shipyard, linking it to AI-based shipbuilding, alternative fuel testing, and vessel repair. The goal is to transition from producing ship sections to building complete vessels, with a target to launch finished ships by 2028.
This includes a $16.8 million marine mobility AI project due by 2028, an $11.3 million alternative fuel propulsion platform to be completed this year, and an unmanned marine systems testbed scheduled for next year. The shipyard will also connect with the Wanju hydrogen cluster for future hydrogen and ammonia vessel projects.
