Jernej Vrtovec Outlines Slovenia's Energy Policy as Ministerial Candidate
Jernej Vrtovec has proposed a pragmatic approach to Slovenia's energy policy, prioritizing nuclear and hydropower development. His focus includes expediting critical infrastructure projects while seeking EU exemptions from emissions certificates for coal operations.

Nominee Jernej Vrtovec for Minister of Infrastructure and Energy emphasizes a realistic energy policy focused on long-term self-sufficiency. He aims to prioritize the second unit of the Krško nuclear power plant and several hydropower projects, including the Kozjak pumped storage facility.
Vrtovec expressed intentions to amend coal legislation and resume requests to the EU for exemptions from carbon allowances, particularly for the Termoelektrarna Šoštanj. He also plans to enhance spatial planning for strategic projects in collaboration with the Ministry of the Environment.
Criticism has arisen regarding solar power support mechanisms, with Vrtovec advocating for projects on degraded land and in industrial areas. A merger of environmental funding bodies is proposed to streamline efforts in energy and sustainability.
