DEFENSE

Jim Garrett, born January 17, 1937, in Hereford, Texas, served in the United States Air Force from 1954 to 1958, receiving training in jet mechanics and B52 bomber maintenance. He was stationed at Bikini Atoll during nuclear testing and earned the Good Conduct Medal.

After his discharge, he worked as an industrial painter and was known for his skills in restoring Volkswagens and dune buggies. Jim met Barbara Hyde in 2016 through church stewardship, and they held a surprise commitment ceremony on January 14, 2017.

He is survived by his partner Barbara, son James, daughters DeAnna and Jami, sister Sherman Lynn Trice, and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and relatives. Jim passed away recently, with Barbara as his caregiver.

A memorial service is scheduled for January 7 at Scenic Chapel in Alamogordo, followed by a private graveside service in Carlsbad. Memorial contributions are suggested to veterans organizations.
