Joint Munitions Command Initiates $800M Modernization Plan for Defense Industrial Base
The Joint Munitions Command (JMC) is implementing a 15-year modernization plan for its Organic Industrial Base, with over $800 million allocated for 36 projects in FY 2024 and 31 projects exceeding $790 million planned for FY 2025. Key initiatives include facility repairs, the construction of a new Joint Missile Maintenance Facility, and upgrades at various ammunition plants, all aimed at enhancing production flexibility, safety through automation, and integrating AI and machine learning. The Joint Munitions Command (JMC) is executing a 15-year modernization plan initiated in early 2022, impacting its 17 arsenals, depots, and ammunition plants, collectively known as the Organic Industrial Base (OIB). In Fiscal Year 2024, JMC launched 36 modernization projects totaling over $800 million across 12 sites, followed by 31 projects exceeding $790 million in FY25 across 11 locations.
Key projects include facility repairs at the Blue Grass Army Depot in Kentucky, construction of a new Joint Missile Maintenance Facility in Pennsylvania, and upgrades at various ammunition plants. The modernization effort focuses on designing flexible production lines, redefining personnel roles, and enhancing safety through automation.
AI and machine learning are being integrated to support human expertise in quality control. JMC emphasizes the need for a skilled workforce alongside technological advancements to ensure effective munitions production.
