Joint Project Explores Floating Nuclear Fusion Reactor Feasibility
The Fusion Power Barge (FusPoB) aims to assess the viability of a compact nuclear fusion reactor on a vessel, led by a consortium including nT-Tao and ABS. Successful implementation could set a precedent for marine fusion energy, impacting maritime decarbonization and remote energy supply.

The Fusion Power Barge (FusPoB) project is evaluating the feasibility of a compact nuclear fusion reactor on a vessel, featuring a 71.4-meter DP2-designated power barge. The consortium, which includes nT-Tao, ABS, Siemens Energy, P&P Marine Consultants, and TEMISTh, is focused on engineering, safety studies, and developing a regulatory pathway.
The vessel will utilize two 8000 kWe steam generators from nT-Tao's fusion reactor, aiming for a commercial prototype around 2032. Challenges include creating a classification framework for marine fusion reactors and ensuring plasma stability in offshore conditions. The project's success could lead to significant advancements in maritime energy solutions and environmental sustainability.
