JR Kyushu, Sumitomo Corporation, and Sumitomo Corporation Kyushu have established Battery Station Kyushu LLC, completing the 'Battery Station Tomiai' project in Kumamoto City on January 30, 2026. This facility will operate as a grid-scale battery, participating in the Ancillary and Capacity Markets.
The project addresses the challenges of stabilizing the power grid in the Kyushu region, where solar power generation has surged, leading to significant output curtailments. By fiscal 2025, it is anticipated that around 1 billion kWh of renewable electricity will go unused due to these curtailments. Battery Station aims to support decarbonization and enhance local energy services.
