JXN Water Plans Major Cost-Cutting Measures Amid Billing Issues
JXN Water aims to save up to $7 million annually by potentially closing the J.H. Fewell Water Treatment Plant by 2028. The utility is addressing ongoing billing challenges while completing projects to stabilize the water system post-2022 federal takeover.

JXN Water could achieve annual savings of $7 million by shutting down the J.H. Fewell Water Treatment Plant by 2028, contingent on reducing water losses. Recent reports indicate that the utility has already completed seven of 13 priority projects since a federal takeover in 2022 and added 495 new customer accounts, generating an extra $101,000 monthly.
Despite these efforts, JXN Water continues to face billing challenges and has yet to secure $54 million in federal grant funding. Contract termination with Veolia is expected to save $800,000 annually, while an influent pump project completion will add another $1.2 million in savings. With ongoing leak reduction, the utility anticipates an additional $5.4 million in savings yearly.
