Kavango Communities Oppose N$7 Billion Water Pipeline Project
Traditional leaders and residents from Kavango East and West are demanding an audit of the Kavango River before NamWater's N$7 billion pipeline project proceeds. Concerns over water access and ecological impact have prompted calls for alternative solutions, including desalination and additional boreholes.

Concerns regarding NamWater's proposed N$7 billion pipeline to Windhoek have surfaced, with traditional leaders and community members from Kavango East and West opposing the project until an audit of the Kavango River is conducted. Rundu Rural constituency councillor Paulus Mbangu emphasized the need to assess the river's water volume before large-scale abstraction, citing ongoing water access issues for local residents.
Community leaders criticized the lack of consultation during the planning process, asserting that viable alternatives, such as desalination and additional boreholes, should be explored. The potential ecological impact on fish populations and the cultural significance of the river for future generations were also highlighted as critical issues.
