Kenya Acquires Israeli Spyder Air Defense System Amid AU Condemnation of Abyei Attack

Kenya has enhanced its military capabilities with the acquisition of an Israeli Spyder air defense system, delivered by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems. This $26 million purchase, finalized in July 2025, aims to secure Kenya's airspace against increasing asymmetric threats.

Concurrently, the African Union condemned an attack on UN peacekeepers in Abyei, Sudan, which resulted in the deaths of at least six Bangladeshi soldiers. The assault, attributed to the Rapid Support Forces, highlights the ongoing instability in Sudan, where a conflict has led to over 40,000 fatalities and the displacement of nearly 14 million people since April 2023. The AU urged for accountability and protection of humanitarian personnel amid the escalating crisis.
