In 2025, the Kenya Defense Forces reported expenditures of Sh190.25 billion, a 17% rise from Sh162.64 billion in 2024. This expenditure represented 4.63% of the total government budget for the year. Regionally, Kenya was the largest military spender, while in Sub-Saharan Africa, it ranked third, following Uganda at Sh167.9 billion and Tanzania at Sh133.4 billion.
Conversely, Ethiopia experienced a 24.6% decrease in military spending, totaling Sh68.4 billion. The data, sourced from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, encompasses all military-related government spending, including salaries, operational costs, and procurement.
