Kepler Communications to Launch 10 Optical Satellites from California Amid Growing Space Data Competition
Kepler Communications Inc. is set to launch 10 satellites into orbit from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California this month. The Toronto-based company aims to enhance real-time computation and data communication in space, building on technology developed since its founding in 2015.
The new satellite constellation will enable faster data transfer using optical connectivity, which utilizes lasers for communication. Kepler has grown to 200 employees and secured major contracts with private firms and space agencies.
The launch is part of a broader trend of increasing competition in space communication, driven by new defense needs and advancements in commercial launch capabilities. Kepler has raised over $200 million, including a $122.7 million Series C funding round in 2023, to support the development of its optical network. The company is also pursuing a multiyear contract with Defence Research and Development Canada for real-time data sharing.
