Kerala Government Approves Purchase of Five Trained Horses for Mounted Police

DEFENSE

The Kerala government has granted administrative sanction to purchase five trained trooper horses from the Indian Army's Remount and Veterinary Services for Rs 42 lakh. This decision addresses an acute shortage affecting the mounted police unit's operations, which previously had only 11 of the 25 authorized horses in service.

The purchase follows a request from the Kerala Police, which highlighted difficulties in meeting operational requirements due to a decline in serviceable horses. Previously, only three horses were procured from the Army when eight were initially approved.

The mounted police unit operates from Thiruvananthapuram and plays roles in crowd control and ceremonial duties. The new horses are expected to improve the unit's operational capacity.
