Kerala Launches KERA-AWD for Low-Emission Rice Production
Kerala's KERA-AWD initiative aims to implement low-emission rice cultivation practices through a multi-stakeholder approach. This project is crucial for addressing global agricultural emissions while maintaining rice productivity.

The KERA-AWD project, initiated in Kerala, unites the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), Kerala Agricultural University (KAU), and other local agencies to enhance rice production sustainably. This initiative focuses on water management, greenhouse gas monitoring, and farmer-led innovations.
As rice is a significant source of methane emissions, improving farming practices is essential for climate mitigation. The project also conducts training on the ORYZA Rice Crop Model to enhance local scientific capabilities. If effective, KERA-AWD could serve as a scalable model for low-emission agriculture in rice-growing areas, promoting both food security and environmental sustainability.
