Kiira Motors Unveils $9 Billion Plan for Electric Vehicle Battery Production
Kiira Motors Corporation has announced a ten-year development strategy worth Shs33.4 trillion (US$9 billion) focused on establishing a local electric vehicle battery manufacturing industry. The initiative aims to reduce reliance on imported components, enhance domestic production, and create local jobs.

Kiira Motors Corporation plans a Shs33.4 trillion (US$9 billion) investment to develop an electric vehicle battery manufacturing industry over the next decade. The initiative includes an 80-gigawatt-hour battery plant at the T6 Industrial Park in Nakasongola, utilizing local minerals for production.
The company has partnered with National Enterprise Corporation to form RADI Energy Systems for this project. Kiira Motors currently produces 2,500 vehicles annually with plans to scale to 10,000. The government has invested Shs486.4 billion (US$131 million) in Kiira Motors and is considering a 10-year vehicle purchase agreement that could generate Shs2.23 trillion (US$600 million).
Challenges include securing infrastructure, reliable electricity, and integrating local labor into the e-mobility framework. The success of these initiatives could significantly influence Uganda's electric vehicle market and local manufacturing capabilities.
