Kinetico Energy Plans Commercial Gas Production in Mpumalanga

Kinetico Energy plans to obtain regulatory approval to initiate gas production in Mpumalanga before the end of 2027, with estimated reserves exceeding six trillion cubic feet of natural gas. The project will focus on a network of production wells near Volksrust and Amersfoort, close to key infrastructure like Eskom's Majuba power station and the Transnet gas pipeline.

Despite a reported 100% drilling success in exploration, initial production tests faced challenges due to water invasion affecting gas flow. The Centre for Environmental Rights has raised concerns about insufficient environmental oversight, highlighting only 94 inspectors for mining across South Africa. The potential for groundwater pollution remains a pivotal issue for local farmers and residents, emphasizing the need for stringent monitoring and adherence to agreements on environmental impacts.
