King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands will host Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako of Japan for a state visit in June 2026. The Rijksvoorlichtingsdienst announced that the visit will enhance cooperation in security, innovation, defense, economic resilience, and international law.

The diplomatic relations trace back to 1600 with the arrival of the Dutch ship De Liefde in Japan. The Dutch East India Company established a trading post in Hirado in 1609, and thereafter, the Dutch were the only Western traders allowed in Japan until 1859. Modern relations include previous state visits in 2000 and 2014.
