Kingston Community Climate Action Fund Launches Food Waste Reduction Project in Local Schools

NATURAL GAS

The Kingston Community Climate Action Fund (KCCAF) is implementing a new project to reduce food waste in local schools by using FoodCyclers. Led by Sustainable Kingston in partnership with Limestone District School Board (LDSB), the initiative will provide FoodCyclers to five to seven schools, including Molly Brant Elementary School.

The project aims to divert organic waste from landfills, thereby reducing methane emissions and promoting sustainability education among students. Each elementary student generates approximately 1.25 kilograms of organic waste annually, contributing to landfill emissions.

The FoodCyclers will grind and dry organic material, creating a product suitable for compost or fertilizer. The project includes funding for two years of replacement filters for the units, with additional fundraising efforts ongoing to purchase more units for local schools. Donations of $20 or more are eligible for a tax receipt.
