Kongsberg and Salt Ship Design Awarded Contract for Norwegian Navy's Standardized Vessels
The Norwegian Defence Materiel Administration has contracted Kongsberg and Salt Ship Design to develop standardised vessel designs for the Royal Norwegian Navy, aiming for delivery of the first vessel by 2030. This initiative is part of Norway’s Long-Term Plan and will streamline naval operations by reducing over 10 existing vessel classes to two standard types.

The Norwegian Defence Materiel Administration (NDMA) awarded a contract on March 30, 2026, to Kongsberg Defence and Aerospace and Salt Ship Design for the design of standardized vessels for the Royal Norwegian Navy. This project aims to develop up to 28 vessels in two sizes—ocean-going and coastal—by leveraging civilian standards and technology.
The shipbuilding competition is set to commence in late 2026, with the first vessel expected to be delivered by 2030. This initiative seeks to enhance operational flexibility and reduce costs by consolidating over 10 existing vessel classes. Strategic implications include bolstering Norway’s defense capabilities and industrial expertise, which may also enable export opportunities.
