Kreios Space Targets Low Earth Orbit with NATO Backing
Spanish start-up Kreios Space aims to deploy satellites below 500 km, leveraging NATO's €8 million investment to advance European defense technologies.

Kreios Space, established in 2021, focuses on launching satellites between 150 and 400 kilometers using a novel electric propulsion system called ABEP. This motor transforms atmospheric air into plasma, reducing fuel dependency and debris generation.
Kreios secured €8 million in September 2025, marking NATO's first investment in Spain through its Innovation Fund, aimed at enhancing European defense capabilities. This funding adds to a previous €2.3 million round in 2024, totaling over €10 million.
The company is set to test its technology in space, potentially improving high-resolution Earth observation and direct communication in critical scenarios. However, competition from companies like SpaceX may pose challenges.
