The Kwakiutl First Nation is initiating a composting project to reduce landfill waste and methane emissions. At a recent District of Port Hardy council meeting, Megan Fee requested a letter of support for a business plan and funding application to Island Coastal Economic Trust.
The proposed facility will process residential and industrial organic waste, producing compost for agricultural and ecological purposes. Currently, the 7 Mile Landfill generates approximately 424 tonnes of methane annually from organic waste.
The initiative aligns with the Province's Clean BC Strategy, aiming to divert 90% of organic waste from landfills by 2030, extending the landfill's life and reducing environmental impacts. The council approved the support letter.
