L3Harris Introduces Wraith Shield for Tactical Radios as Counter-Drone Solution
L3Harris Technologies has announced Wraith Shield, a software upgrade that transforms tactical radios into AI-enabled counter-drone sensors, enhancing battlefield capabilities without additional hardware. The upgrade will first deploy on the AN/PRC-171 radio in 2026 and will be available for over 100,000 existing Wraith-capable radios used by U.S. and allied forces.
L3Harris's Wraith Shield will launch on the AN/PRC-171 radio in 2026, enabling existing tactical radios to function as AI-driven counter-drone sensors. This software upgrade, developed with DataShapes AI, allows soldiers to detect and disrupt small drones without extra hardware, leveraging the Wraith waveform designed for resilient communication under electronic warfare.
The RF-9820S Compact Team Radio serves as the initial platform, with future upgrades for over 100,000 radios already fielded by allied militaries. Wraith Shield integrates within current air defense systems, improving situational awareness and response times against threats in complex environments. The cost-effective nature of the software update presents a strategic advantage in countering inexpensive drone threats.
