La Pedrera Selected for Renewable Energy Supply to Desalination Plant
The Orihuela Chamber of Commerce has proposed La Pedrera reservoir as a site for a solar plant to power Torrevieja's desalination facility. This initiative aims to enhance energy efficiency and reduce water costs for farmers, while addressing environmental concerns.

La Pedrera reservoir is proposed as the site for a photovoltaic plant to supply renewable energy to the Torrevieja desalination facility. This project emerged during a conference on natural resources management, where regional officials discussed the need to decrease dependency on the conventional electricity grid.
Chamber president Mario Martínez emphasized the importance of local decision-making in site selection, citing potential economic benefits despite landscape impact. Additional considerations include utilizing industrial rooftops and irrigation ponds to minimize effects on protected areas. The proposal for La Pedrera will be included in consultations regarding the photovoltaic initiative, following the closure of objections to the broader natural resources management plan.
