Latvia Moves Forward with Purchase of Archer Howitzers from Sweden
DEFENSE
On January 13, the Latvian government supported a report on purchasing 'Archer' wheeled artillery systems for the National Armed Forces. The acquisition aims to enhance indirect fire capabilities and strengthen Latvia's cooperation with Sweden.
In June 2022, Latvia signed a letter of intent with Sweden for 18 'Archer' systems. A defense cooperation roadmap will be signed on January 16, focusing on joint training and the deployment of 'Archer' systems in Latvia from 2026.
In the interim, a joint 'Archer' 6x6 unit will be formed for joint exercises. The 2026 defense budget allocates 159 million euros for indirect fire support.
