Law Ministry Budget Cut to ₹4,509 Crore; Increases for Supreme Court and Election Commission in 2026-27
The Ministry of Law and Justice's budget for 2026-27 has been reduced to ₹4,509.06 crore, a decrease of ₹400 crore from the previous year. In contrast, the Supreme Court's budget has increased to ₹622.11 crore, and the Election Commission's allocation has risen to ₹382.20 crore. Additionally, significant funds have been earmarked for infrastructure development, legal aid initiatives, and the e-Courts Phase III project.

The Ministry of Law and Justice has been allocated ₹4,509.06 crore in the Union Budget for 2026-27, a decrease of ₹400 crore from the previous year's allocation of ₹4,998.24 crore. The Election Commission of India received an increase of ₹80 crore, totaling ₹382.20 crore for the upcoming fiscal year, compared to ₹304 crore last year.
The Supreme Court's budget is set at ₹622.11 crore, up from ₹547 crore in 2025-26. Infrastructure development for the judiciary has been allocated ₹810 crore, down from ₹998 crore previously, with ₹200 crore designated for fast-track courts.
The e-Courts Phase III project will receive ₹1,200 crore, and the National Mission for Justice Delivery and Legal Reforms has an allocation of ₹1,240 crore. Legal aid initiatives have increased, with ₹300 crore for the Legal Aid Defense Counsel System and ₹250 crore for the National Legal Services Authority.
