LDEQ Reviews Air Quality Permit for Sungas Renewables Plant in Pineville
The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality is accepting public comments on the air quality permit for the $2 billion Sungas Renewables plant, which aims to begin operations in 2027. The facility is projected to produce 400,000-500,000 metric tons of green methanol annually, but concerns about environmental impacts and carbon emissions persist.

The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ) is gathering public input on an air quality permit for the Sungas Renewables facility in Pineville, designed to generate 400,000-500,000 metric tons of green methanol annually. Expected to commence operations in 2027, the nearly $2 billion plant requires this permit to regulate emissions.
While many business leaders support the permit, community members have raised concerns about environmental protection and the legacy of the former International Paper mill. The discussion has also included the facility's plans to export emissions to CapturePoint's Carbon Storage Hub. Public comments will be accepted until June 9.
