Leonardo Launches Hystrix Air Defence System for Drone and Munitions Countermeasures
Leonardo has launched the Hystrix 40 Air Defence System, a modular mid-layer gun system designed for drone and munitions countermeasures. The system, which integrates with the Michelangelo Dome and features both 76 mm and 40 mm options for varying ranges, is expected to have a prototype ready by year-end, with trials to follow. Its remote operation and dual-feed magazines allow for versatile engagement strategies, although its weight limits mobility.

Leonardo has unveiled the Hystrix 40 Air Defence System (ADS), a mid-layer gun system derived from the Marlin 40 naval mount. The system integrates into the Michelangelo Dome, organized around a C5 structure that links sensors, command elements, and effectors.
It features a modular design allowing various calibres and effectors to meet mission needs. The Hystrix includes the 76 mm Hystrix 76 ADS for long-range engagement and the 40 mm systems for mid-range defense, both operating under a unified command-and-control logic.
Development is self-financed, with a prototype expected by year-end and trials to follow. The Hystrix 76 ADS is remotely operated with a two-way data link and features a 360-degree traverse. It uses dual-feed magazines and supports multiple ammunition types, including guided munitions. The system weighs 7,000 kg without ammunition, limiting its mobile application.
