Liberty Steel's Cash Shortage Delays Steel Production for Royal Navy Warships
Liberty Steel Dalzell in Scotland has not commenced production for a contract to supply 34,000 tonnes of steel for three Royal Navy fleet solid support ships due to cashflow problems. Sir David Murray has urged the UK government to intervene as Liberty Steel struggles with financial difficulties, including the inability to purchase raw materials.
The first ship, RFA Resurgent, is scheduled for delivery in 2031. Although trial runs produced about 1,000 tonnes of steel, production is currently limited. Murray proposes an investment of £50 million could make the plant profitable within two years. The UK government has previously intervened in steel production and must decide on future actions regarding Liberty Steel.
