Lithuania Initiates Global First in Dismantling RBMK Reactors at Ignalina Plant
Lithuania is set to be the first country to dismantle RBMK-type reactor cores at the Ignalina nuclear power plant, with plans for completion by 2049. This unprecedented task involves advanced robotics and international expertise, addressing safety and environmental concerns while positioning Visaginas for nuclear tourism.

Lithuania's Ignalina nuclear power plant is undertaking the dismantling of RBMK-type reactor cores, a first globally. Currently, 45% of the equipment has been dismantled, with a completion target set for 2049.
Robots will handle the most hazardous components, minimizing human exposure to high radiation levels. Specialists from international firms are expected to assist with graphite component removal. Following the removal of all nuclear fuel, temporary storage solutions are in place until a permanent geological repository is established by 2090.
The project also aims for at least 77% of metals to be decontaminated for reuse. Political discussions regarding repository locations remain ongoing, with assessments of 77 potential sites underway.
